The story opens with Sanam Ali Khan, a timid young girl nicknamed "Khaani" by her family in a lighthearted jab at her often fearful demeanor. We are introduced to her warm, middle-class household, where her loving parents work as a bank officer and a Montessori teacher to provide for their four children.
